When you’re feeling unwell, the first instinct for many is to search for answers. Over the years, Google has become the go-to tool for self-diagnosis, with its endless list of articles and forums. But with the rise of AI chatbots like ChatGPT, many are turning to them for medical advice.

While AI promises quick easy answers, it comes with its own set of risks, often surpassing the limitations of Google searches. Let’s break it down.

1. AI Replies Are Concise—but Often Oversimplified and Misleading

The bot suggested potential causes like a cold or asthma but didn’t flag red-flag symptoms that could point to something more serious, like lung cancer.

Contrast this with Google, where searching "persistent cough causes" presents a broad list of possibilities, allowing you to dig deeper into reliable medical sources.

2. Google Requires Effort but Offers Variety

While a trained doctor knows how to probe deeper and ask the right questions, AI lacks this human intuition, making it prone to errors in interpreting vague or incomplete inputs.

5. AI Is Only as Good as Its Training Data

During my work on AI for medical applications, I realized how crucial training data quality is. AI models trained on U.S.-centric datasets might suggest medications unavailable in other countries or overlook diseases more common in other regions.

Final Thoughts
